Pittsburgh Poetry Slam

The Pittsburgh Poetry Slam is:

free,
open to the public and most importantly...
open to any and all persons who wish to compete regardless of race, color, ethnicity, gender, lifestyle, national origin, religion, class or ability.
the only certified poetry slam in Pennsylvania!

WHAT IS A POETRY SLAM?

A poetry slam is a trademarked form of entertainment owned by Poetry Slam, Inc., a non-profit organization founded by Marc Smith. It is an open competition for poets to determine whose work touches the most hearts. (In the slam community there is a phrase that: "The best poet always loses.") Basically, poetry slams are the result of Marc Smith's vision to find a way to bring poetry back to the people. He succeeded.

RULES:

Poets have three minutes to read or perform an original creation.

Poets may not use:

pre-recorded music/instruments,
costumes or
props.

Five judges who have been randomly selected from the audience will score each of the poets on a scale of 1 to 10. Judges are asked to consider both the performance and the craft of the poem. The high and low score will be dropped. The middle scores will be averaged.

PRIZES!

Winning poets actually get cash money for getting up there and sharing their work. The top three poets at the end of the slam pass a hat. The one with the most money in their hat wins the Audience Prize. (Poets have earned over $40.00 for reading six minutes of poetry!)
