Mission
Sun Crumbs is a non-profit trans-cultural multi-arts organization that
produces performances and provides exhibition space to individual artists.
The productions and exhibitions of Sun Crumbs communicate the artistic
vision of its founders, Christiane Leach and Christina Springer.
At Sun Crumbs, we are working artists working for artists. By sharing
our artistic vision with other artists, we create interdisciplinary collaborative
artworks and/or visual explorations of relevant concern to our communities.
On a monthly basis, Sun Crumbs provides artistic programs to the community.
Find out more about these events by viewing our Events
Calendar.
Biannually, we produce a large interdisciplinary
collaborative work centered around a theme of the staff's choosing.
From time to time, we produce our programming in the form of books, videotapes
and compact discs.
History
In May of 1998, Christiane Leach reached out to other Pittsburgh artists
with an idea for a collaborative show entitled "The Painted Phrase."
During the pre-production phase, many of the artists felt support, rejuvenation
and encouragement. In addition, many artists felt as if doorways to new
methods of expression opened. The artists encouraged Leach to consider
formalizing her subtle method of empowerment, nurturing and contribution
to inner artistic development. Artists Susan Constanse and Christina Springer
joined Leach to begin a collaboration that supports artists through community
and creativity.
In June of 1998, Springer, Constanse and Leach communicated their ideas
to people they thought would have the stamina and dedication to become
part of a working Board of Directors.
After numerous board meetings, the vision for Sun Crumbs became reality.
The Board's motto best exemplifies the nature of the organization: "Let's
get shit done!" With such empowering leadership, our staff produced
over 30 events in Pittsburgh during our first season. (1998/1999).
In 2000, Sun Crumbs was designated as a 501(c) 3 non-profit arts organization.
We will continue to:
- Produce a variety of successful events;
- Create partnerships with entities in the private sector, schools and
other non-profit organizations;
- Support and nurture artists and artistic development;
- Showcase new and emerging artists;
- Examine and challenge the perception of artwork as a seasonal activity
and
- Enlighten Pittsburgh audiences about new and existing forms.
- And we have come to know.
"We must carve a safe space for artists, poets, dancers, musicians
and life travelers where we are free to create, grow and collaborate.
Through offering opportunities for the mélange of existing talent
in this city, we can produce shows that rejuvenate, while expressing themes
of self-definition and unity. As artists, we examine the forces of society
and the roles we play." - Christiane Leach
The question isn't so much can we co-exist, but HOW?
